Three years ago, Emily Jordan was devastated when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer at a young age of 29, the doctors advised her to have a radical hysterectomy, which crushed her and husband Mike’s hopes of having a baby. What’s even worse is that before surgery, her doctor delivered more devastating news: Emily was pregnant. “I can’t describe what that was like after finding out you have cancer, after finding out your chance of ever carrying a baby is gone,” Emily said.Emily’s mother, Cindy, was as devastated as the couple. She wanted to do everything to help her infertile daughter become a parent. She made an unusual proposition: She wants to be a surrogate mom and carry the couple’s child.

At first, the couple didn’t take it seriously. Cindy was already in her 50s, so they were skeptical about the chances of her pulling it off. But she was determined to help, so she went through hormonal manipulation and psychological evaluation to prepare her body for pregnancy. The fertilization specialist, Dr. Helen Kim, implanted an embryo produced by Emily’s egg and Mike’s sperm into Cindy’s uterus.
